Stuck Silent
Self Portrait. The Stuck series was inspired by the Storyville prostitutes in the photographs of E.J. Bellocq. Here Velia attempts to blur her physical identity while interacting with the medium of clear tape on a mirror. Stuck is the first series the artist uses a mirror with an additional medium to create the entire surface composition. This mixed media approach will be explored further through out her career.

love the almost monochomatic space you are in here… and the way the body is so much like a mannequin!

Shards of broken glass and tape masking out the face and body parts suggests suppression or freedom but which does our subject want. Things to stay the same or change. A metaphor for just about everything today.
