Artist's Description

Mamure Kalesi is a castle from early Middle Ages, which was used at the time of the crusades as a hospital for injured knights. The castle is located about 4 miles east of Anamur in the Turkish province of Mersin at the Mediterranean Sea.

Origins of the castle date back to the 3rd Century AD, when the Romans controlled the region. Under the rule of the Kingdom of Little Armenia, which was closely associated with the crusader states, the castle was rebuilt. Therefore, there are also architecture influences of the francs in the Middle Ages.

In the second half of the 14th Century, the mighty fortress came under the control of the Turkish Karamanoğulları. After the Ottomans had also got full control over Anatolia, they used the castle until the end of the Ottoman Empire in the early 20th Century.
