The cistern was built by Byzantines in the 6th century under the reign of Justinian in Constantinople (Istanbul). Located in the underground near to the Hagia Sophia, the cistern is also known as “Basilika Cistern” or “Sunken Palace” (Turkish: Yerebatan Sarayı).
