i love you
she will tell you
whisper it into your collar bone
tickle it over your knee
massage it into the knots along your spine
i love you
she will spill
promise it with her eyes
scrape it across your shoulders
pat it on the back of your hand
i love you so much
she will divulge
knead it into your heart
breathe it into your lungs
tie it around your stomach
i will always love you
she will admit
i have always loved you
she will confess
even in the empty mornings where you wake
alone to a cold shiver and smooth sheets
even in the chilled chicken and rice still
sitting on the table with wilted orchids
you believe her
because there’s no one else
you wait for as long as she needs
even if it takes three weeks
even if it takes two months
even if it takes a year
you wait
always ready
with chicken and orchids
with fresh sheets
because there’s no one else
she will come back after three weeks
her shoes damp
mud and worms caked under her fingernails
the cuffs of her jeans soaking
i love you
she will mash it into your nose
slam it into your chest
wrench it up and down your wrists
before leaving again
and still
you will stay up at night with the candles
feeding off of yourself like them
you will glare out through the window
spotted with drooling black drops
you will leave a chipped plate with
leftovers from last week in the oven
always ready
because there’s no one else
she will come back after two months
dewy grass slicked to her ankles and calves
tiny puddles rippling around her feet
her hair tangled in dripping tendrils
i still love you
she will slap it across your face
shred it into your favorite shirt
scream it into each eardrum
before leaving again
and still
you will hang out at the local bar
flirting with girls who aren’t supposed to be there
like you
you will tangle yourself in the lonely sheets
with one of them and pretend she’s her
you will forget her before the sun rises
with new purpose and reason
you might heat up the food
if you had any
you might pick fresh flowers
if you remembered
always ready
because there’s no one else
she will come back after one year
her nipples showing through her drenched shirt
goosebumps rising sharply in shivering waves
a smile splashing at the corners of her mouth
i will always love you
she will leave it with the scent on your clothes
write it on your dusty table with petals
drip it across your linoleum floors
before leaving
finally
but
this time
she will turn
her arms full of clothes
and books
pictures
and cds
with the rain
falling
falling
falling
painting her hair black
making her skin glisten and sparkle
cleansing her soul of you
i love the rain the most
she will throw her head back to the pouring sky
and howl with liquid laughter
before she tosses her things in the back of a topless car
and stands on the seat as it drives away
her face glowing with freedom

Christ if this coming out of a block I can’t wait to read the unblocked stuff. So real and beautiful.I could smell the flowers, see the puddles on the floor and hear the rain and her laughter.

You’ve broken the block in a very compelling way……

I did not see where this was going to end; I continue to have such romantic notions in my head…
You certainly have captured longing and the division of where that can take people….

As always, Lys your writing is sublime….

I’ve been in this writing. I’ve tried to get out of this writing. I’ve been trapped inside and outside of this writing. And still I crave.

I love the rain the most too. x

You are back, lil sis. that much is true, although I do have a sneaking suspicion you never left. Or maybe they never left you.

Sigh. That was not supposed to come out like Dr. Seuss, but there it is. Your words always make me feel giddy and grounded all at once. I guess they would be my perfect man.
