Elliott Erwitt, my favourite photographer, recently published a book Sequentially Yours that inspired me to keep on taking pictures even when I thought that I had something for my Framed collection. And that was how these pictures, of a couple at the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town, also became part of the Series collection.

Digital photography is doing for photography what the piano did for keyboard music. You can still play music composed for the harpsichord on the piano but not the other way around.

Faul, Elliot Erwitt is one of two of my fave photog’s also, primarily for this statement of his:

“*The basic quality of photography is that it should be believable*”

… and also this statement of his, when asked if a manipulated photograph is still a photograph:

“*No, it’s no longer a photograph. If someone wants to do that, why don’t they learn to paint, or something*” … … hehehe ;-)

Faul, your images are certainly very believable, and without the fuss of major post-ed! :-)
Fine image series of your couple attempting to get a “self-portrait” :-)))

  • For me the appeal of Erwitt is first the humour he finds everywhere but also how he pursue themes like in all the books just about dogs. I strongly disagree with his view on so called manipulation. My quote on that is: “Digital photography is doing for photography what the piano did for keyboard music” You can still play music composed for the harpsichord on the piano but not the other way around. (I am tempted to show the original just to illustrate how much “manipulation” went into this apart from cropping) Thanks for the comment, it made me think. A lot.

    :-)))

I understand Erwitt’s comment about manipulation to be in reference to extreme manip, where the end result is so far removed from the original and real image, and it’s meaning is lost … I do take on your point about harpsicord vs piano though ;-) I don’t notice much manip (if any) of your images – for me the “story” of your images is clear for everyone to see, without extreme enhancements … just one of many reasons why I enjoy your photography :-)) :-))
