Artist's Description

The Indo-Chinese Tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti) is a subspecies found across Burma, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Southwest China.

This tiger species is listed as endangered by the IUCN, bordering on critically endangered. According to estimates, just 350 individuals remain in the wild.

The Indo-Chinese tiger is killed largely to stock pharmacies with traditional Chinese medicine (an economy seen by many poachers as a viable way out of poverty), but they are also persecuted locally as a threat to livestock.

Recent rises in eco-tourism provide some hope to conservationists battling the lucrative trade in tiger products.
