Apostrophes by avionz

Posted on February 16, 2008

Just a short moan.

I wonder if it’s about time we got rid of apostrophes. I notice examples of their incorrect use every day. They seem to confuse a lot of people.
What really perplexes me is that so-called professional sign-writers often have no idea either. The other day I noticed a bright, very large sign in town. It had no less than six apostrophe errors. Every word ending in an ‘s’ had an apostrophe. Video’s, radio’s ….. What was really funny was that the only word needing one, ’you’re’, didn’t..

So lets forget all about thes’e confu’sing thing’s and jus’t enjoy taking photo’s.

thank you so much for this – i am dyslexic and can never remember where to put them and on top of which can be left stumped as to what comments i leave as my spelling and grammar is well – naff…at least when you take a photograph you get some chance of producing something that is lovely too look at and you dont have to worry about apostrophes and spelling!

    Hi Nikki

Yes, I know quite a few dyslexic people and they are confused about apostrophes too. I guess there is definitely a place for correct grammar but other times there are different ways to get a message across- such as photography, as you said. Perhaps text messages are showing us the way??? Hmmm. perhaps not.

Ye’s the thing’s are a nuisance and we dont need any more nuisance’s. British English doe’s them one way and American English does’ them another. Ju’st for’get it. Horti’culture is’ even wor’se. Plant cultivar’s name’s have apostrophe’s ar’ound them en’closed by period’s and non hort editor’s are always’ making bad change’s. Hah!

For those who don’t know…the apostrophe is used to show possession such as it belongs to you therefor it is your’s. It also is used for contractions of two words…such as I have become I’ve…
Just a note if anyone wanted to know…have a blessed day…

    Thanks for that. Cheers Mike

Hahahaha! I know what you mean … I was a sid g*t who used to get beaten up at school for correcting people’s grammar, spelling and pronounciation so I agree … let ’em go!!
