Bush shadows

Ink, wax and water-colour on a full sheet of Saunders cold pressed, 300gms with printing techniques.
I love this paper for it’s soft but meaty texture and the randomness of its surface. Full sheets appeal because I get to keep the deckle edges as part of the rawness I look for with the direct application of water soluble hues.

I read recently how the Japanese think – or have traditionally thought of – paper as sacred. Working with paper is always a thrill for me ….... its tactility and the very simple relationship with the fabric of trees is a delightful inter-relationship

    Kerryn Madsen...

Hi Avalyn. A capturing intense and vibrant work.
I love Saunders 300gsm more so over the Arches brand – used it a lot for my life drawing work. It is a 100% rag paper made from the cellulose fibres of cotton plants. Much stronger and archival than the cellulistic acidic/tanin wood fibres made from tree pulp which have to be PH treated and bleached which weakens the short fibres. Cartridge papers, like that used for student visual art diaries and in the many reams used for general photocopy/printing papers, are made from the cellulose wood fibres (from trees).
You may or may not know this. Don’t want to sound pedantic but there are many people that do not know about paper fibre properties or treatment of such to get them to an end-use product.

  • avalyn replied

Hi Kerryn…...I really appreciate all of the paper-news. I had read a little about paper construction in the past but did not identify why I loved Saunders so much, since I’ve used Arches as a watercolour ground for very many years.
It’s that TREE thing! I think I’ve become a tree I’ve spent so much time in the forest…......and, I love journaling too…...............the intimacy I feel with the little cartridge block of cheap paper. I think I’ve done a lot of my best work in a journal…..I certainly have a pile of them.
    Loved your comment! X

    Kerryn Madsen...

Thanks for your reply Avalyn You say in above comment – “I’m cruising around the WARM northern climes” ... If by chance you get as far north as Innisfail ??? you are more than welcome to come visit me!
:-) As always, loving your art work. Just a thought – Maybe you could think about publishling a book of your journal work or otherwise (could use one of those on-line publishers)
    Cheers K. XXX
PS Have an older brother who is a tree hugger and sees their aura fields!

  • avalyn replied

gosh Innisfail is so FAR north…........ will get there one day…..... but I’ve been looking to buy a property and it seems I will be moving back to the hills close to Byron, which is so my heart place….... though Byron Bay town is ALL madness now….......... I’m experiencing one of those follow your nose times and all kinds of wonderful meetings are happening.
I like the idea of doing an on-line book…..... need to resettle before too much of that focus though.

Beside the fact I like it without explanations or justifications of any nature (other than perhaps my own), I was so touch by your sensitivity to the light of being: “its tactility and the very simple relationship with the fabric of trees is a delightful inter-relationship”.

    Wonderful experience. Thank you.

Hi Ava, I think I see something entirely different in this piece. It appears to me like a harbor with boats doced there in a light fog. That’s what’s so wonderful about abstract work. Each of us can interpret it in our way according to what it means to us individually. I’m not familiar with this technique but it is such interesting work. A very creative piece!
