The Obby Oss tradition in Padstow, Cornwall, UK is an ancient one; some think it is 4000 years old. There are two Obby Osses – this is the Blue Ribbon Party one, supposedly the more sober of the two Partys, since it was founded by supporters of temperance in the nineteenth century, but these days there may not be much difference! The festival commemorates the arrival of summer – there is a haunting and beautiful song which is sung and played continuously throughout the parade. Any lass caught and covered by the skirts of the Oss is suppose to become pregnant very soon after!!! The teaser shown here is supposed to wake the Oss up and keep it going throughout the day – does a good job of it too! Pentax K10D, 1/200 sec, f 3.5, ISO 200, 18 mm lens.
