The road bridge at Lydford Gorge, West Devon. Median photo: Pentax K 10D, 1/13 sec, f 3.5, ISO 100, zoom lens set at 18 mm. HDR image, 3 exposures, 2 ev apart.
Wow, a bridge under a bridge, great old stone arch bridge on top. interesting how they built it on the edge of the rock face. Excellent.
Thanks for the comment, barnsis. The stone bridge has a slightly pointed arch which usually suggests Norman construction – maybe someone will enlighten me as to whether that’s so or not. The “bridge” underneath is, I suppose, technically a bridge, but really it’s a walkway around one rockface, leading to the “Devil’s Punchbowl”, where the water thunders down through a very narrow space (about 3 feet) indeed.
Absolutely beautiful!!! I would love to visit this lovely place. Congratulations on your well-deserved feature!!
This gorge is one of the National Trusts’s properties in Devon and is extremely picturesque. The water just thunders through a narrow gap about six feet wide just beyond this bridge. The river Lyd then continues to flow along the valley creating such scenes as this one and further downstream at this waterfall (actually a joining stream). I also took this picture nearby. Thanks for visiting, commenting and adding this pic to your favourites.
