Bir miftuħ

The ancient chapel of Santa Marija ta Bir Miftuħ (literally, Saint Mary of the Open Well) is located near the main airport and provides a rare haven of peace in this busy part of the island of Malta, especially at sunset when this was taken. This wayside chapel, which is now looked after by Malta’s main heritage trust, is one of the best remaining examples of simple medieval church architecture. It dates from at least 1430 and used to be the main parish church for a large surrounding area, but it suffered depredations from marauding Turks and others and so a new parish church was built closer to the centre of the nearby village. It contains remains of a fresco of the Last Judgement over the main door. Fragments of this painting, which dates from about 1480, were only recently discovered under many layers of paint. The chapel is surrounded by fields and has been well looked after by its new keepers.
