Wow, a bridge under a bridge, great old stone arch bridge on top. interesting how they built it on the edge of the rock face. Excellent.

Thanks for the comment, barnsis. The stone bridge has a slightly pointed arch which usually suggests Norman construction – maybe someone will enlighten me as to whether that’s so or not. The “bridge” underneath is, I suppose, technically a bridge, but really it’s a walkway around one rockface, leading to the “Devil’s Punchbowl”, where the water thunders down through a very narrow space (about 3 feet) indeed.

This gorge is one of the National Trusts’s properties in Devon and is extremely picturesque. The water just thunders through a narrow gap about six feet wide just beyond this bridge. The river Lyd then continues to flow along the valley creating such scenes as this one and further downstream at this waterfall (actually a joining stream). I also took this picture nearby.
