Peat on Pellets - county Clare by Avril Brand

Peat on Pellets - county Clare by

Another view of peat (turf) drying out in heaps on wooden pellets… In the ‘old’ days, the peat would be packed in little piles like pyramids. There are still areas (in fact, not far from where Iive but I did not see it done this way this year) where you will find the neat little rows of peat ‘pyramids’.

A popular event at festivals, like the Rose of Clare field day, is to have a ‘peat packing competition’… stacking peat as high as possible.

I am amazed that peat is still used in this way… is it for burning in fireplaces? Or is it for using as fertilizer in the gardens, as we do here…. is it renewable?
  • We still use peat to burn in fireplaces as well as for fuelling the ‘range cookers’… during winter time, the faintly sweet aroma fills the air in rural areas. Although it is becoming scarce, the cutting of the turf is very traditional and most farmers have their own small bog where peat is cut every year.

Here is more information about the use of peat here

Thank you so much for the additional information Avril…I find it very interesting as I’ve read so many books on Ireland…. I thought that peat was endangered and that it was not a renewable resource… I’m glad to hear that the old ways are still in force…
