Bringing home the peat in Ireland - Oil Paintings by

Oils (16 × 20 inches) (Original sold)

Bringing home the peat, in years past, when the donkey-cart was a familiar sight on Irish roads. This is a sight that many old eyes will remember fondly.

Tired and hungry, he will be impatient to enjoy his meal of cabbage, spuds and maybe, if he is lucky, a piece of bacon. But it will be some hours before he will reach home yet.

In the background, the small piles of peat are neatly stacked like little pyramids – drying out in the field.

This fellow has loaded his cart and will now take the long road back home from the bog.

The colors in this painting are so wonderfully subdued. A pale but strong sense of color that sort of melts into the picture. This is quite lovely. Excellent talent you possess.

  • Thank you Judi!! This is one of ‘those’ paintings that I really struggle to take a good photograph of…

Peat used to be wonderful on a fire and lasted for hours but not pc any more. Has the peat cutting stopped in Ireland as well as in Scotland? It’s great to record past times like this in your paintings Avril.

  • Thank you jacqi… we still use peat! The cutting of peat, working in the bogs, etc is so much a part of rural culture here. Most farms still have a piece of bog land which provides peat, not only for their own needs but for the neighbours too. Although peat is expensive now, I cannot imagine going through the winter without the sweet smelling peat smoke wafting through the countryside.
