Oil painting on canvas (20 × 26inches). Original sold.
A wonderful old lady in Kilrush showed me an old calender with this photograph taken during the late 1800’s.It was hard to distinguish any features and everything was blurry but I could not resist trying to paint the scene. Of course, with a bit of artistic license as I had no idea what colours to use except for my visit to Scattery Island.
All the buildings are now in ruins but I found some references through the library and I hope I did justice to the Island and the people on the photograph (as well as the donkey!)
Painting this was a fascinating project and I found myself mesmerised by the little girl standing to the right hand side. While the adults pose, this little girl is caught at a strange moment. She is staring at the photographer (or artist) strangely – as if to say. “Intruder”
The community is no longer there and I wonder what happened to the little girl.

Thank you webbie, barnsis :), maria and eric.
My hubby is always my best and harshest critic. When I thought I had finished this painting he said there is still something missing. I must find a way to show more life. So I added faint twirls of smoke (everyone used peat in those days) rising from a few chimneys. And a tiny figure of a woman about to enter one of the houses. I hope it worked!
Oh my goodness…..a beauty!! I always wanted to live in a place like this. Love those little houses.
Sal!! thank you. I live in a little house very similar – just renovated.
