"If you could read my mind" - Gorilla Oil painting

Gorilla Oil Painting on canvas (40×40cm)

When I first saw this gorilla, I was immediately struck by what I perceived to be sadness. He looks so deep in thought and I wondered what this beautiful creature was thinking… of family lost, freedom lost and what we humans do in our endless arrogance and greed to other animals on this planet.

I hope that one day, we will realise that they are just as worthy of life and freedom as we would like to believe ourselves to be.

I love painting eyes. However, what I like about this painting is not being able to see the gorilla’s eyes. His posture tells the story.

This is a close-up view of the painting.

Gorillas, the largest of the living primates, are ground-dwelling herbivores that inhabit the forests of Africa. The DNA of gorillas is 98%–99% identical to that of a human, and they are the next closest living relatives to humans after the two chimpanzee species.

Gorilla’s are highly endangered, and have been subject to intense poaching for a long time. Threats to gorilla survival include habitat destruction and the bushmeat trade. In 2004 a population of several hundred gorillas in the Odzala National Park, Republic of Congo was essentially wiped out by the Ebola virus.

A 2006 study published in Science concluded that more than 5,000 gorillas may have died in recent outbreaks of the Ebola virus in central Africa. The researchers indicated that in conjunction with commercial hunting of these apes creates “a recipe for rapid ecological extinction”. (Wikipedia)

And you can tell, you totally love animals…...they’re safe in your hands my friend, National Geographic should hire you as their number one wildlife animal painter. This portrait is fabulous…...Ilove it!!! Well done Avril!

you know what i never understand is how with all the species that have gone ecstinct due to hunting and slaughter we are still so short sighted do we just not care enough are we so wrapt up in our own delusional conciet as to our superiorty why can man not see his conection to all things i could write a book here and now as my anger would manifest itself but let me just tell you somthing i saw last night firstly i thought as poler bears are in danger of becoming extinct that they where protected but oh no some asshole just has to pay a fortune to go out with a high powered riffle no where near the bear in no danger wehatsoever and blow this magnificent creature away just so he can feel his own power call himself a man now that was bad enough but it turns out that this bear was a hybred cross between a grizzly and a poler bear never believesd to be possible was the rarest creature in the world an you know what this guy said when they asked him if he felt bad about shooting gee no im proud to have the only one of its kind stuffed as a trophy in my trophy room he felt like he had achieved somthing by killing the rarest bear in the world id like to shoot him and stick his head on a plack with title well i wont write it hear lets just say it would contain a lot of four letter words

  • Avril Brand replied

Ah Dean… I know what you mean! Big guns, macho hunters! But faced with a wild animal and no big gun, there is not a tree high enough for them to climb. If these people were truly so big and brave, they would hunt as our ancestors did… with a spear or knife and not hide behind a rock with a rifle.

  • dnlddean

yeah somtimes i think they must be another species homicidalhomus moronicus they make me feel ashemned of the human race

Amazing work Avril. The brutality executed against this majestic creatures is so very shameful for the human race and just one example of man’s total disrespect and disregard for the magnificence of nature’s creations. The most evolved and intelligent species? Sometimes I seriously doubt it.
    The most dangerous…..absolutely!!

As an animal lover, I understand your respect for the beautiful and sentient animals that share our planet. Your photograph and narrative of this Gorilla is very touching and I also hope that people will wake up and stop the cruelty and neglect of these precious beings. I just posted several shots of police horses that I felt were neglected in intense heat in a suburb east of Los Angeles. They appeared to be so uncomfortable in their tight socks and shoes. I look forward to seeing more of your wonderful photography.

  • Avril Brand replied

Thank you so much Julie… but I am a really bad photographer!! The gorilla is an oil painting of a photo kindly permitted by Rocketchook. :-)

I also sincerely hope that people will start to take note of what we do to other beings on this planet. Thank you so much for the comment!

This is a wonderful painting of a creature that has as much right to be on this Planet as we have

No one has the right to take a life juts for the sake of it.
