"Elephants - Namib Trek"
Oils on linen painting of elephants trekking across the Namib Desert on their annual migration to the Etosha Pans. They are tired, hungry and thirsty – and who knows how many family members they have lost along the way.
When they reach Etosha, in time for the flooding, these elephants swim and play like children, happy to have the blessing of water.
Elephants are once again vulnerable. The ivory trade will lead to the slaughter of these magnificent and very clever animals. Their family ties and compassion for one another is evident for anyone who watches and follows the herds.
Donations from the sale of this painting will be used for anti-poaching conservation organisations.

My wife and I both have a passion for elephants, and like to get close and personal with them on all possible occasions, though up till now only the Asian variety. They are so responsive to one another and their surroundings. Thank you for sharing this with us Avril. Keith

Brilliant! Can you remember Jamie Uys’s movie about the animals of the Kalahari & Namib deserts after the flooding? I think it was called Beautiful People. Your artwork is just amazing!
Avril Brand replied
Thanks so much, Mariaan! Oh yes… I remember so well! Gosh, now here’s one for you! – do you remember one of his first movies – Dirkie? A cute little boy, lost in the desert… broke my heart, that little guy and even worse, when I thought his little dog would not make it! Ah memories!
Mariaan Krog A...
Yes I do!!! It was so realistic! We had fun times back then, going to the drive ins to see these Afrikaans classics. How long ago were you in S.A.? Kyknet (Afrikaans part of M-Net) showed old Afrikaans movies on Sundays. I loved it, but I think they stopped now.
Avril Brand replied
Oh wow, Mariaan… the old drive-in flicks! Picnic baskets because the cafeteria was too expensive and those ‘radio’ boxes that never seemed to work!... And then when I grew up (LOL)... was die in-ry die lekker vry!!! Ai, nou voel ek darem oud, jong!
