"Survivors" - Oil Painting
“Survivors” is an oil painting showing two orphaned cheetah cubs from Namibia who were rescued soon after their mother was trapped by a farmer. Their little faces depict the sadness, fear and uncertainty the future holds for them.
Original oil painting on canvas: 20×30 inches
Cheetahs are the fastest land animals on earth, reaching speeds of up to 100 kph (70mph). Beautiful and sleek, they are the smallest of the big cats and their prey is often stolen by other predators.
Highly threatened, these animals are in great need of protection. They need plenty of space for hunting and that space is steadily being reduced by human expansion.
Out of all the big cats, the cheetah is the least able to adapt to new environments. It has always proved difficult to breed in captivity, although recently a few zoos have managed to succeed at this. Once widely hunted for its fur, the cheetah now suffers more from the loss of both habitat and prey.

Your understanding and feeling for these animals is so evident, Avril. A painting, a dance, a musical rendition all reflect the passion of the artist creating it, and your shines through clearly. Wonderful! Keith
Avril Brand, 2 months ago
Thank you so much, Keith. I cannot imagine painting without feeling passionate about the subject and even harder to eventually part with the painting.

this is amazing artwork. I do not paint, so I have no idea what it takes to do this. This looks like it takes time for the detail work, and probably lot of tries to get it right. Bravo on this one.
Avril Brand, 2 months ago
Thank you George! It takes a long time, at least three months (or maybe I am a slow painter :-) ). I work in layers and there are about 15 maybe 20 layers on this painting. Each layer is glazed when dry and then I start all over again until I think the fur looks good enough. The problem is knowing when to stop!

Love this painting, Avril. You might be interested in this artist – Jason Morgan. I bought a cd of his, a wonderful artist. I always enjoy the section Latest Painting on the Easel…

Thank you so much! Oh yes… I know Jason’s work… he is one of my all time favourite wildlife artists. His migration painting is simply genius. I have always wanted to paint the great mara migration but so far, its only in ‘thought’ phase!

Oh I’m so glad you know him too. He sure is an inspiration! You just wonder how they do it sometimes!

Wildlife art is a labour of love… patience, patience, patience. Sometimes, I just stare at some of the work I see because words cannot describe it.
Take a look at Paul Augustinus ...
