Sketching

Sketching for me is probably ‘the’ most enjoyable part of creating a new design. The sketch is for me all about the thought process, fine tuning an idea. The sketch is the first moment that idea is realised – transformed into the physical. I find it exciting to be able to get something down quickly and loosely before refining it and eventually coming up with what will become the finished design.

My favourite drawing tool for sketching is a ball point pen, I like the fact that I can create differant grades of line, much like a pencil but without the hassle of resharpening, I save that for the initial line work on the finished piece.

Most of my sketching is done on the Tube (the Underground) to and from work. I gave up on pads and instead always grab a couple of sheets of A4 printer paper folded into quarters, giving me 16 panels to doodle in.

My sketches initally start out as thumbnails, no bigger than a matchbox, the final sketch is usually A5.

The sketch usually captures an energy that a re-creation of a sketch will not and so typically I will complete a sketch that I decide will be the finished design and photocopy it to the size I require the final piece to be which is normally A3. After this I like to lightbox it the old fashioned way before inking and finally colouring it in Photoshop.

I thought it would be cool and interesting if some of you other Bubblers would put forward some of your working processes and samples of your sketches. If anyone would like to ask questions then please feel free to Bubblemail me.

Happy doodling!!

Yeah, I love it, delving into the minds of artists – I think i’ll try and get some sketches up regularly, be cool if a few of us would do it. You up for it Naf?

Well, I probably would be, but I don’t really do much sketching anymore… not since Art college (18yrs ago!!!) I pretty much do everything directly on the dreaded Mac I’m afraid. Perhaps I should do some more….
