As I had purchased a new Canon 24mm 1.4 lens for my Iceland trip I was keen to try it out. There was little hope of northern light action on this night so I went out into the freezing cold at 02:15am to attempt a star trail photo. This was more tricky due the storm force winds so I had to find as sheltered a location as possible which I found behind an old farm building behind our b&b near Iceland’s most southerly village of Vik.

This was my 1st attempt at the stacking multiple shot method for star trails. It is composed of 333 ten second exposure shots before the clouds came in. These were stacked in photoshop and a script is run to set layer opacity etc. An excellent guide for this process can be found here: -
Star Trail Guide

Be warned, my 333 jpg exposures created a 7.43gb psb photoshop file!

Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Canon EF24 1.4L II with Dew-Not lens heater on tripod. Processed with Photoshop.
333 10s exposures, ISO400, f2.5, 24mm

The lighting is beautiful on the foreground Roddy and the clear unpolluted skies show those trails an absolute treat.

  • Thank you very much Stuart. It looks a lot nicer than it was though, was blowing a bloody hurricane.
