Location: Voyager Fur Trade Rendezvous reenactment at Villa Louis, Prairie du Chien, WI

I spied the glass water bottle hanging from the kilt of one of the Rendezvous reenactors. I liked how it looked against the red tartan plaid.

England emptied its prisons and sent Scottish prisoners to the America’s to fight the French and Indian War in the disputed western frontier lands. Better to shed Scottish blod than English, after all, no loss for a dead Scott. Many of the Scottsmen defected to the other side and fought with the Native Americans. The Scots and the Indians got along well; one theory is the similarity of the organization of Scottish clans and the native tribes. Other Scotts also fled south and settled in the Carolina mountains.

Many of these Scots later fought with the tribes against the British at Prairie du Chien battles in the War of 1812.

Thank you to Cora Wandel for her tech assist

Rendezvous reenactments are popular in Wisconsin, where people meet for a weekend to play historical Wisconsin. They wear the dress, speak the language and live as furtraders from the 1600-1800. Some are well organized annual events.
