Ashland Mural Walk: The Lumberjacks by

Location: JC Penney building; 4th Avenue West and Main Street; Ashland Wisconsin

Ashland is a small city on Chequamegon Bay, located on Lake’s Superior’s southern shore. The Mural Walk is a popular downtown attraction that chronicles the history of the area. For this mural, the artists sent out a call for old photos of lumberjacks who worked in this region. Out of 44 submissions, 22 were selected for this mural. Some families held reunions when their ancestor’s portrait was completed. Ashland’s Mural Walk is a stroll through the city’s history as seen through 13 (so far) murals by local artists Kelly Meredith and Susan Prentice Martinsen. Kelly Meredith always paints the faces. There has never been a problem with graffiti on the murals. Perhaps the murals are treated with respect because the community as a whole feels such a strong a sense of pride in them.

    Fantastic find J, great eye!

  • Not too hard to find. There are 13 in all around downtown Ashland, practically one on every street corner! The exterior murals take up the entire outside of the building. (There are 3 interior murals at the Bureau of Indian Afairs, McDonalds and Best Western hotel.) There is a mural of the Ashland Ore Dock currently in progress.
