Greyhound Dilemma

I must run fast enough
At the track today,
To keep the people happy
Who come here and pay.

I must run fast enough
At the track today,
Or I’ll be treated poorly,
Just like yesterday.

I must run fast enough
At the track today,
For I was downgraded
After losing Saturday.

I must run fast enough
At the track today,
To keep this job as racer,
Or with my life I’ll pay.

I couldn’t run fast enough
At the track today,
Will I die now? Someone, please,
I need a place to stay…

Artist's Description

Many wonderful adoption groups work to place retired racing greyhounds into loving homes. Many greyhounds, however, are still destroyed because they have nowhere to go after their racing careers end. This simple poem is a plea to those who are looking for a dog as a pet. Please consider adopting one of these beautiful, gentle dogs. They make wonderful pets.

This is my adopted greyhound who graced my home and heart from December 2000 until her death in November 2001.
