This pelican was sitting on a rail on the pier in St. Petersburg, Florida, USA. He did not seem to be afraid of all the people milling about.

Having lived most of my life in the northeast U.S., I am enjoying retired life in sunny Florida. I enjoy photographing many different kinds of things, but especially flowers and animals, including the beautiful birds found here in Florida. I am currently using a Canon EOS Rebel XSi/450D camera, a Canon 55-250 mm telescopic zoom lens, and a Sony P10 Cyber-shot digital camera. My newest acquisition is a Canon PowerShot SX260 HS, a point and shoot which I will be carrying in my purse.

He is just so cute. I HAVE to see a pelican in my life. They are for sure a top 10 bird to see of mine. I am so enchanted by their mouth-pouch. I take it they are very friendly? beautiful capture AuntDot

  • They walk around with the people on the pier, probably because they find a little food here and there. If there are fishermen around, they gather nearby to get some scraps of fish. They are very unusual looking. I hadn’t seen one (in real life) before moving to Florida. My daughter lives near Tampa Bay, where this was taken, so I see them all the time now. Thanks for your wonderful comments, Heather!

They’re pretty pushy birds, especially if there’s food around – just love to watch them (which doesn’t happen very often, of course)!

  • They seem pretty fearless! So odd looking, but I’m getting used to them. Thanks, Monnie!

I have never before seen a pelican preening although we have quite a few in our local river. They are wonderful birds and this is a really good shot of this one.

  • You wonder how they control those huge beaks! I appreciate your comments, Christina. Thanks!
