Abby Rose ~ First Dog, Heart Dog by

My beloved Greyhound, Abby Rose, graced my life for 10 months. She died when she was only five years old. It’s been over ten years, and I still miss her terribly. I wrote this poem a few months after she died, after I stood on my back deck to watch a meteor shower that was occurring that night. The poem tells of my experience that night.

Having lived most of my life in the northeast U.S., I am enjoying retired life in sunny Florida. I enjoy photographing many different kinds of things, but especially flowers and animals, including the beautiful birds found here in Florida. I am currently using a Canon EOS Rebel XSi/450D camera, a Canon 55-250 mm telescopic zoom lens, and a Sony P10 Cyber-shot digital camera. My newest acquisition is a Canon PowerShot SX260 HS, a point and shoot which I will be carrying in my purse.

How tenderly portrayed, Dot. Did you think about adding this to The Healing Journey group? It would fit well there. God bless! Abby Rose was fortunate to have five years of life with a kind soul like you.

  • Thank you so much, Bonnie. I appreciate that. I only WISH I had five years with this sweet creature, but I had her for only 10 1/2 months. She was and still is in my heart as if I had her for 10 years. She was 4 when she came off the racetrack and found her way to me through a wonderful adoption group. She developed an autoimmune disease that prevented her bone marrow from making new blood. Two weeks after discovery and $4700 later trying to make her well, I lost her anyway. One of the saddest things I’ve ever gone through. I will look into that group – thanks!

Wow. I wish she had been able to be with you longer. I’m sure she loved the time with you. What a dear poem and tribute to your Abby Rose. So sorry you miss her so much, I completely understand the depth of sadness. A very sweet image too!

That’s beautiful, I know just how you feel and to think of them running free now sure helps accept their absence.

  • Thank you so much, Viv!
