This raptor, the American Kestrel ~ a small falcon also known as a Sparrow Hawk ~ is a resident of the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. The park has many birds in its care, most of which have permanent wing injuries. I was happy to get the bird in focus instead of the fence!

From the Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park website:
“American Kestrel, a small falcon
Scientific Name: Falco sarverius
These raptors are found in fields and grasslands from Canada to Mexico and seem to have taken especially well to urban and suburban environments. Kestrels feed mainly on insects, bats, lizards, mice, small snakes and frogs.”

Having lived most of my life in the northeast U.S., I am enjoying retired life in sunny Florida. I enjoy photographing many different kinds of things, but especially flowers and animals, including the beautiful birds found here in Florida. I am currently using a Canon EOS Rebel XSi/450D camera, a Canon 55-250 mm telescopic zoom lens, and a Sony P10 Cyber-shot digital camera. My newest acquisition is a Canon PowerShot SX260 HS, a point and shoot which I will be carrying in my purse.

Wow! I can’t believe you took this through a fence! YOU WIN THE HORSE! (but I don’t have one) Wouldn’t I love to even catch a glimpse of one of these magnificent birds! WOW! Absolutely beautiful coloring and a great, piercing look he’s giving you!

  • Thank you so much, Navigator! I don’t know what I’d do with a horse anyway! LOL It was wonderful spending time at the wildlife park, seeing and photographing all sorts of wildlife. As for the fence, sometimes with the zoom lens and manual focusing I can get the bird or whatever, and not the fence in focus. It doesn’t always work, so I was thrilled to get this.
