The Moonlight Oil by AuntDot

It seems everything reminds me of the oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico these days. This is an abstract of rust and peeling paint on a blue dumpster located behind a store in Dunnellon, Florida. To me it looks like moonlight shining on the surf and the oil in the water.

Having lived most of my life in the northeast U.S., I am enjoying retired life in sunny Florida. I enjoy photographing many different kinds of things, but especially flowers and animals, including the beautiful birds found here in Florida. I am currently using a Canon EOS Rebel XSi/450D camera, a Canon 55-250 mm telescopic zoom lens, and a Sony P10 Cyber-shot digital camera. My newest acquisition is a Canon PowerShot SX260 HS, a point and shoot which I will be carrying in my purse.

Amazing abstract Dot. You are so right. It does look like an oil slick.

  • Thank you, Angela. Glad I just wasn’t going insane seeing this oil everywhere. Do you know when I was posting this, I couldn’t think of the word “slick”? I must be getting old!! Thanks also for the fave!

I hate how it’s being handled! And the bullshit that is flying around!!!! How dare they insult the public as they are not to mention that everyone is lying and pointing fingers at each other. Real third world bullshit!

  • I share your frustration, even more so since I live in Florida and my kids are all in Florida quite near the coasts. It will be coming this way, and it’s like a bad dream!

Yes, this does indeed conjure up the thought of an oil slick. Yours is a beautiful image while the sludge in the Gulf is definitely not. Well done. You should have that dumpster bronzed! What a treasure trove it is for terrific images.

  • Thank you. Most of the dumpsters are a dull green around here, but I did find this bright blue one, and also a red one in a nearby town. Crazy to think I am taking pictures of dumpsters! Like I’ve been saying lately, there is a parallel universe in rust!! lol

Oh, some of the perplexed looks I’ve received from people when doing macro work on rusted hulks or peeling junk are priceless! No doubt you’ve been on the receiving end of this, too. I just smile and say “it’s for art’s sake.” When on Midway, I was drooling over piles of old metal, wood, boats, etc that US Fish and Wildlife teams have been collecting and sorting into piles that will be barged to Honolulu for disposal. It’s all discarded detritus from the years of military presence on Midway before it was turned over to Fish and WIldlife. If only I’d had more time to work on it with a macro lens. I did find paydirt on a WWII vintage Higgins boat that was rusting away next to albatross chicks. One of these years I’ll post some of them. They all reminded me of coral reefs and the denizens inhabiting them. Cheers, Gina

  • You know I’ll be looking for them, so don’t put it off too long! :-))
I did explain my purpose to one lady who came with her recyclables while I was taking a photo of the bin she needed to use. She just said," I thought it was something like that!" LOL
