This is Pebbles, a retired racing greyhound that lived with us for a time as a foster dog in 2002. After adopting her, unfortunately my asthma got so bad that I was forced to give her up. Her favorite toy was this huge colorful stuffed octopus. I’m crazy about these retired racers, and I’ll tell anyone who will listen what great pets they make when their racing days are over.

My beloved greyhounds I have fostered and Abby Rose, whom I adopted. She was my true heart dog. I miss them all.

Having lived most of my life in the northeast U.S., I am enjoying retired life in sunny Florida. I enjoy photographing many different kinds of things, but especially flowers and animals, including the beautiful birds found here in Florida. I am currently using a Canon EOS Rebel XSi/450D camera, a Canon 55-250 mm telescopic zoom lens, and a Sony P10 Cyber-shot digital camera. My newest acquisition is a Canon PowerShot SX260 HS, a point and shoot which I will be carrying in my purse.

LOL….i love when dogs get possessive with their toys!! what a great shot….thanks for the laugh dot!!

  • Thanks, Michael. I love to be around greyhounds, even though I have terrible allergies to dogs and cats. This pup was so playful, she was a pure joy to have around.

My Shi-tzu is VERY VERY jealous right now!! She COLLECTS toys…every bag my wife and I bring into the house needs to be inspected by her for hidden toys.

  • And I bet she gets a little toy every time you go shopping! LOL This octopus started out with a squeaker in each leg, but that didn’t last long with all the chewing on them. It was fun!

She’s such a cutie, Dot — I’m so glad there are folks like you who adopt these wonderful dogs! Adorable capture!

  • Thank you, Monnie. This one eventually caused me a pretty bad bout with asthma, so I couldn’t keep her very long. She was adorable and so playful, and of course found a loving permanent home.

Ooh she is gorgeous Dot and its such a lovely shot

  • Thanks, Angela. She was so much fun, being the youngest I fostered or adopted. She just didn’t like to race, so she was retired before the age of two. I had her for several weeks before a permanent home was found. I adore greyhounds!

Adorable, Dot! After seeing this, Maddi now wants an octopus — as if she doesn’t already have enough toys…. :)

  • You have to get one like this with a squeaker in each of the legs! It was so much fun to hear all that squeaking, but eventually they stopped making noise and I had to take them out and discard them so she wouldn’t swallow them. Fun, though!

Adorable Dot… How lucky you are to foster them.. I would love to get one for John… They are adorable pets and certainly need a good home after so much work… Well captured.

  • Thank you, Carol. If you’re serious, look for a greyhound meet & greet in your area, or call a greyhound adoption group to see where you can go to meet some greyhounds. An adoption rep can find a greyhound to fit your needs and lifestyle, and will teach you about the care of greyhounds, such as never letting them run off leash except in a securely fenced yard. (Rule #1) I ♥ greyhounds!

wonderful capture Dot. Do you have any with you now?

  • Thanks, Rosie. No, my allergies were too bad when I tried to live with the dogs. My Abby Rose was about the only one who didn’t lead me to bad asthma attacks and strong steroid meds. I fostered several after she died, but I had such a hard time with the asthma, I had to stop. So, I can’t do that anymore, much as I’d love to. Plus I shattered my femur in 2006 and even though I walk well now (with lots of titanium in my leg), I’d be afraid a large dog would pull me off my feet if they got spooked for any reason. In my next life, however, I will have two greyhounds at all times!
