Artist's Description

Broken Fence deals with the beautiful tenuous relationship between neighbours whether it is in the burbs where people are pressed hard up against each other or in rural areas where issues vary but the main differences remain. The pet crocodile of the farmer on the right has broken through the boundary fence. His neighbour has run over the croc either accidentally or on purpose – we are not sure. The farmers wife comforts her grieving husband whose loss is building in a silent rage.. The incident is only minutes old. The colours of the Australian outback highlighted by the very blue skies are the setting for this story.
Originally the animal in contention was a dead dog but I was told that there are many (apparently) artists whose last painting included a dead dog and you are considered cursed by painting one. Thankfully I just drew the original sketch with a dog and stopped there.
600 × 1800mm – oil and gel mediums on canvas done with my finger wrapped in rag, pallette knives and brushes.
Original is at Le Blanc Gallery, Hastings Street, Noosa.
