The Chess Game by Andrew Tomlins

The Chess Game by

This is inspired by the inflexibility and competiveness of the male speices and a recognition of female patience, emotional intelligence and intellectuality. The man is in a checkmate position, his last hope casually resting in the woman’s hand, behind her chair – his bishop – plucked from the board moments beforehand. His whole body is tense as he grips the table, his brow brooding, thinking but not thinking. She knows she has won and patiently waits for him to acknowlege this, leaning back in her ‘throne’ waiting for the kettle to boil, when their rivalry can be put on hold and they can go back to being a loving couple. This is done in a mixed media of conti crayon, pastels and oil paint and oil washes

Thanks for the comment Sesillie, I set it up in conti crayon first which meant that a lot of the emotion was scrawled onto the board at the beginning. It was a lot of fun grinding crayon and pastel into the surface and these characters just emerged.

yeah, I am enjoying this, your sense of ‘micro drama’ is very good, it is something which I am working on too, keep it up, cheers M

  • Thanks Michael. Appreciate the words. Relationship settings are always good for micro dramas. I love your caravans as well. I have a thing for retro caravans. There is something pure and gutsy about them.

    oh…yes. Sweet, sweet victory. :)
She is so me. Look at that slight smile—ha! She is all over him like cake at a kid’s birthday party. She doesn’t mind waiting at all, that just makes it all the more fun.
love it, andrew. your work has a life of it’s own.

  • Haha. I think she is enjoying the wait. And the longer he resists the more she enjoys it and the harder it is for him to admit defeat. And then she sits there and enjoys it even more. I think that smile is going to get bigger. And yes the victory is very tasty. Thanks Kristin.

Yep…I love playing chess but not so happy to loose. Cool drawing.

  • Thanks Albert. It can become personal. I think also because as you play it there always a number of options. Though he knows the game is up he is still looking for those options. Its a bit like life. Draw breathe to the very last.
