A Spiritual What If
If we had not had
Jesus, Muhammad,
Moses and all the other
do-gooders,
we may have been
better off.
We wouldn’t need to ponder
which day is a Sabbath,
whether to turn
the other cheek
or take the other fellow’s
eye out,
how many times a day to pray,
or what kinds of orgies
await us in heaven..
I don’t know if sacrificing virgins,
worshipping the sun,
or exalting gods
made of colored beads
is better?
Halliburton may still have
the inside track in Iraq?
Jihadies of the Vengeance Deity
could still be doing battle
with warriors of the Holy Dollar?
Perhaps
poets,
dissidents
and non-believers
always had it right?

A what if indeed but since we did… it lends towards thoughts of whether man has it right, to the perspective sought, and that which is required to have it the way it is… if it is to be understood at all. I like to ponder these things too, and one of my favorite poets was Kahlil Gibran, with his book,‘The prophet.’
A great poet, and an excellent book to stimulate one’s imagination and nurture the spirit…
I like to think that such ponderings, as is in this poem, are a way to re-examine the present, and to recreate it based on lessons learned…
Many thanks..

The world would have been worse. Sounds naive but look around you.The collective forces of religion, government and society are what keep many people on the right track. We are a dumb species and without them we would never have come this far.
You notice that in the poem I left he question open. It really matters not how we answer the question. What matters is what we do going forward (We have come this far. Now do we keep on doing exactly the same thing?).
I “took a look around”, and can clearly see what the “collective forces of religion, government, and society” have done: Bloody religious conflicts throughout history, and two World Wars in the last century, including the use of nuclear weapons against populated cities! Over 100 million people dead!
Not sure how much worse we could do without your cherished institutions??
Allow me to leave you with this quote by Eckhart Tolle:
“Humans are a dangerously insane and very sick species. That’s not a judgment. It’s a fact.
It is also a fact that the sanity is there underneath the madness. Healing and redemption are available right now.”

BTW, considering the “insanity” of our species, or as you called it “dumb species”, it certainly is not the fault of the wise men and women, the prophets or the gods, that we have made such a mess out of things. Your point is well taken… Their collective wisdom have helped for sure… yet again, so much more is needed, and we can only hope…
In peace~
