the light shines on my hands this early morning,
fills the cracks, the lines,
warms the fields of my palms.
i turn my hands down, remembering their shape
as they as they would cradle your face, curve them up again,
and dip them in the sea….
water pours out,
leaving traces of salt,
like feathers, ghosts of the waves.
my hand is a white shell….
i study the curves.

I’m always afraid to read your words, Terri… I have to be sure it’s a good time to go ahead and cry… that I don’t have to be concerned about teary, red eyes… so I save them until I’m alone and I can let the words embrace my heart and surrender the tears that my soul holds for the quiet, private dusk of the day… it’s something every woman needs to permit herself, and a technique you mastered long ago…
