Lullaby

I often wonder what we teach our children.

Innocence, so lost, is with a reckoning against the nature of childhood. The baser parts of our nature are so often learnt: hate, pride, predjudice, are brought to them, and in so doing, often bring such despair.

In a lullaby we ask our children to sleep and dream by trying to assuage their worries. In so doing, I think we also try to assuage our own fears!

Sleep my child, sleep
and weave the joy which is yours
Be embraced by our love!
and flavour your dreams with hope
that is given to us,
by you

We shall be yours
A shield against the rages
to cherish and protect you
ne’er to neglect you
though all may seem too hard

Sleep my love, sleep
What can our poor souls teach you?
What will you learn around you
from the World within our time?

Pray my love, pray

May grace and fortune
befall you
like misty rain to bathe you
to cool the furied miscontent,
and hide a burning World

May honesty so guide you
and humility so chide you
so the pride of men
mislead you not
down paths of dread and fear

Hear my Words, my son,
in endless mornings dawning
from a generation ending
to one which is beginning
each day so brings awakening
to a new World so re-born!

Sleep, my child, sleep!
dream of things sweet and playful
of things winsome and wonderful
that will cast aside the shadows
of discontent
of ours and against our
making

So sleep, my son, and dream!
May your dreams so now bless us!
and from your love so grace us
to make our ghosts stand
stark, naked, smiling!
‘gainst the warm blaze of the Sun
