Koi Camaraderie? Straight From The Camera... by

Gooseneck Hill Waterfowl Farm

This conclave of Koi exhibits feeding frenzy tendencies as an anonymous young man eggs them on (with fish food, not eggs). Not only was this scene a riot, it was also mesmerizing. The boiling, roiling, moiling fish were in constant motion, & from a distance, it looked as if they were frying in oil (sounded like it, too), the world’s largest & most colorful fishfry. The opportunistic little ducks scrambled to get a bit of the action, & at times they walked right over the backs of the seemingly solidly packed koi. They did pretty well, too, & the whole scene was hysterical.

They make a wonderful, colourful photograph Sheila and the boy just adds interest to the scene.
Unfortunately, they are another introduced species to NZ that have caused untold damage. They were introduced to get rid of weeds choking rivers, streams and lakes but sadly they prefer to eat native fish !

  • We have the same difficulties in the Great Lakes ~ & invasive species are Ray’s specialty. Koi aren’t a problem here because they can’t handle the cold winters, but huge Asian Carp, gobies & others are rampant. The boy in this picture was perfectly dressed, I thought ~ got several shots with no people, but this fellow’s complementary colors seemed to work nicely. Thank you, Roy.

Excellent shot, I work in an aquarium shop and we sell Koi. They are lovely – although I couldn’t eat a full one :-)

  • These guys lead a charmed life; I don’t think anybody eats them, not even the geese & swans! Watching the little ducks walking over the backs of the close-packed fish was a hoot, & they were very adept at it. Whole lotta churnin’ goin’ on…. Thanks, Gary.

Awesome! The fish are almost abstract … love the composition, and you’re right, the little boy really adds to the pic. Good catch!!!

  • Thank you, Denzil! I have another that I may post ~ one which shows one of the wee ducks standing on a fish….

Neat picture! How do you get such good shots!

  • Haha! What can I say? This one, as noted, is straight from the camera; no editing, no nothin’. And considering that I’m still swaying a bit from the labyrinthitis, it amazes even me! Thanks, Sharon, & for the favorite.
