I think it was more than a vision of stone & crenellation, but on this mysterious misty morning, I might have believed anything.
Bolton Castle & its village of Castle Bolton, near Leyburn in Wensleydale, N. Yorkshire, rise from the dales like a spectre. The complicated & utterly compelling history of this marvelous pile would take pages (volumes, perhaps) to set down. Construction was begun in 1379, & it took twenty years to complete. It was built by Richard le Scrope, & has remained in private hands throughout. The current owner is Lord Bolton, a direct descendant of Richard.
