Lovely view of Lake Michigan from this high perch, Sheila! I like the warning sign …but I would take it as a personal challenge (except for the throwing rocks part). I really like the color of the water.
Ha ha! There are a few places in this extensive desert where people are encouraged (well, at least not actively DIScouraged) to climb & slide & otherwise mess themselves up, but this particular spot is very exposed. People obviously do skid on down & climb back up here. This place was VERY windy the day we were there ~ sand flying everywhere. Away from the edge, things were much calmer, so we limited our hiking to the less fraught areas! Thanks, Gene.
A grand vista, Sheila. It really shows the magnitude of the Great Lakes. And the sign is kind of negative adverising, methinks. Along the same lines as “Wet Paint”. Everyone has to touch it to check. I can see much Running and Rock Throwing going on.
Thanks, Mike. No one around that day to test the waters, so to speak. I did not run or throw any rocks at Ray. Or at the water. But I could have….
I think that would be as far as I would go Sheila – far too energetic for me. Great backdrop and horizon. Re the rocks, Oh please, just one small one ! Great photo.
Thanks, Roy. I know ~ what better way to get people to throw rocks than to tell them not to…? I think we could have thrown rocks (& what ever else came to hand) with impunity that day. Nobody up above, nobody down below.
Whew 450 feet?! I rather like the way the sign doesn’t so much prohibit exploring as let people know that climbing back up is tough!
Right… you can go on a wild slide of a ride down if you REALLY want to, but then what? It isn’t as if you can hike a mile along the lakeshore to an easier ascent… it’s pretty much like this, or worse, all along the way! Thanks, Georgie!
So….what do you do here? Where’s the “Do Not Have Fun” sign? You’d think they’d turn it into some sort of tourist trap or something. Marvellous find, Sheila! :o)
I’d like to say that there’s an ENORMOUS ‘Do Not Have Fun’ billboard as you enter the park, but the sign pictured here was one of the few we encountered. Now that the place has been voted Most Beautiful Place, etc., by a reasonably large people-pool, it may become a tourist trap. And yes, I like the literal interpretation of Tourist Trap. Unfortunately, the most obnoxious would be able to scramble back up. Ouch. Thanks, Deb.
Definitely the kind of sign to encourage people to do the opposite. Well spotted. The lake beyond is like an ocean. Amazing. Kasia
Thanks, Kasia. We were the only ones around so probably could’ve gotten away with anything, but being good, law-abiding citizens, we just took pictures. That was challenge enough because of the wind! The Great Lakes ARE like oceans. There are even tidal features (minor but detectable), & in strong winds, some pretty respectable surf at times!

Hi Sheila – I visted this these dunes many years ago and have never forgotten them – great shot exactly as I remember !!
Thank you, GM. Time for another trip, I’d say, though you should probably wait until the excitement dies down. And remember… no rock throwing.

Gosh, do not go anywhere near I would have said. Great capture Sheila.
I kind of fancied a roll down to the water, but I did NOT fancy the climb back up. Thanks, Gary.
