No pretensions here, just a reasonably well-composed shot of a well-composed Scotsman who landed on my doorstep before the Buffalo Museum of Science’s 150th anniversary gala on 1 October 2011. Had to post it; too busy to think about much these days, but this was hard to ignore. This Black-Tie Optional event led to much hilarity & mirth among a few of our invitees who weren’t at all sure WHAT to wear, but Ray opted for this, the last word in Foreign Formal. And he looked an absolute TREAT!! The only one to rival him was an actual piper in Gordon kit, who piped us in to dinner. Ray is wearing MacDonald… that’s my tartan. His tartan is Buchanan, but the kilt rental place would have charged him extra for that. Enjoy, one & all; you may never pass this way again.
I wove a red Buchanan dancing sash for one of our RSCDS teachers. This certainly looks as if it should satisfy the “black tie” requirements.
Thanks, Bryan. And thanks for the favorite. If I ever get him into Buchanan, I’ll post another. He has a modern Buchanan tartan necktie, but he hardly ever wears a necktie, so it’s hard to catch him at it. Yes, his foreign formal did the trick. BTW ~ I see you’re in Missoula; this Scotsman’s nephew just moved to Missoula from New York City a couple of months ago….
ray looks grand in his outfit ..BUT..tell him tae pull his sporran up next time four fingers between the top o it ain his belt..lol great wee shot
Ha & ha! Ray took his cue from the video supplied by the kilt rental outfit… they didn’t bother with the four-finger rule, it seems, & the object seemed to be Make It As Comfortable For Yourself As Possible. Back in the day when me mum ran the pipe band in my hometown of Lewiston, NY, they did adhere to the rule of standard droop, at least, so all sporrans were uniformly distributed. This picture was taken late at night, after the event, & everything was beginning to go south. The video did explain how to use the toilet whilst wearing the kilt; that part was a treat. I suggested that Ray should wear a good old-fashioned feileadhbeag ~ you know… wind his big plaidie around himself, pull it up between his legs & tuck it in his waistband. But that wouldn’t have been Formal enough. Thanks, Joak.
Fabulous capture of your Ray, Sheila. Superb! Doesn’t he scrub up well LOL
You’d never have guessed! Yes, there is a be-kilted formal guy under those blue jeans, though it didn’t last long. The next day he was fixing our furnace which decided to poop out on the chilliest day of the season (thus far). Thanks, Gary.
