I Am Ms. Van Gogh ~ The Earless Wonder by

Or, What Does It Take To Blow Up This Balloon?

One of our more bounce-to-the-ounce chipmunks lost an ear late last winter, making her another addition to our beat-up menagerie. Before this ‘accident’, we just called her ‘Chippy’ or ‘Chiparoo’, or the inane equivalent, but after she appeared in this guise, she became Raggylug, named for a Cottontail rabbit in an Ernest Thompson Seton tale that appears in Wild Animals I Have Known. But then our neighbor suggested Van Gogh & that stuck. Of course the multi-named creature doesn’t know who she is at this point.
Be that as it may, she remains undaunted & friendly, & has taken a liking to my Dansko shoes. My non-cloven hoof is encased there, acting as a prop for a peanut.

Awww!! She is still sooo cute!! Funny thing….when I was younger, we had a chipmunk, male, that kept coming around like this for nuts…he was missing his left ear, and we named him Leo!! :O]

  • Thanks, Tracy. And for the fave. Amazing how these critters bounce back from these injuries! I suggested to Ms. VG that she protect that non-ear from bugs & dirt & other debris, but she seems oblivious to the Dangers That Lurk. She & Leo would have complemented each other nicely. Interestingly, this girl had a litter early in the season, & after the near-grown babies began appearing WITH their mother around our door, MsVG disappeared completely, presumably to have another brood. In the meantime, the more aggressive of the two babies we saw began filling the gap, & was climbing on my knee & stuffing peanuts into its face without the slightest apprehension. About six weeks later, MsVG reappeared… we have seen no new babies, nor have we seen the first baby since. In other words, MsVG rules the roost (much like Lady Grey), & that’s that!

very nice Sheila. They are cute little creatures but they must not like me because they run when they see me :-(

  • Now, now, David; no sad faces allowed. Just a little patience & a poised peanut… your day will come. On the other hand, I know how they feel…. heh heh. Having said that (couldn’t resist), Thanks!!

    extremely cute. ;-)

  • Many thanks, Toni, for the favorite & for the Watch! Cute’s the word, not to mention funny. And for all her whizbang action, she’s a remarkably placid animal. One day she came into the house through the kitchen door, looked around, then proceeded to perambulate around the perimeter of the ground floor. She took her time, stuck close to the wall going under furniture & around insurmountable obstacles (my only moment of angst was when she got to the foot of the stairs ~ I didn’t want her going up there, particularly), carefully avoided two hot-air registers, then left the same way she’d come. I just stood & watched her, talked to her a bit, but she had her own agenda & nothing riled her. Never a dull moment.

    She is very cute!!

What a delightul creature and story Sheila – not many of many of us go through life unscathed !
It’s marvellous to see this little one still trusts people.

  • And she IS scathed… not only the missing ear, but scars all down her back (though these are fading). I do believe you’ve seen her (you commented…) with both ears intact! Thanks, Roy.

What a story you tell Sheila!! I’m so sorry we missed each other in Niagara in May – I’ll just have to come back!! This is cute personified, and I think your hoof adds a certain dignity to the shot LOL

  • Glad you appreciated that hoof ~ not everyone would. One of the gray squirrels is absolutely fascinated by those shoes, even when there is no peanut on board. Funny critters, these furries. And yes, you must return!! Check out the link in my reply to Roy immediately above. Ms. Chips/VanGogh in an earlier life. Thanks, Denzil.
