I Should Have Just Stayed There ~ Cape Ann, Massachusetts by

And I could’ve, for at least a couple more days. The splendid sands of Good Harbor Beach along the Atlantic in Gloucester, Massachusetts, with a different view of the twin lights of Thacher Island. As I see this island from the window of my customary lodgings at Bass Rocks, most of my photos reflect that scene. But Good Harbor is a short walk away, & at this time of year, it is nearly deserted (especially when it’s as cold & windy as it was on this day).

What a lovely scene, Sheila. Marvellous shot! Cold and windy, perhaps, but at least the sun is shining. I trust the vacation went well. Meanwhile, back here in Atlantis we’re hoping that mean old levee don’t break….

  • Keep your head above water & your stick on the ice. My first three days at MY Atlantis were overcast as well as cold & windy, but by late Wednesday afternoon, the sun showed itself off & on, & Thursday was very nice throughout. Had that day completely to myself so puttered & visited a couple of friends in the morning & vegetated to the sound of crashing surf all afternoon. Ahhhhhhh. Thanks, Mike. I’d say it’s Great To Be Home, but that would be a lie. However, I hasten to add that it’s always nice to see Ray….

We missed you..but don’t tell anyone.

  • I wouldn’t THINK of it. In fact, the less I think these days, the better. The get-away wasn’t nearly long enough, but hey. I had a truly edifying visit with Peggy on Wednesday; she came down to Cape Ann, & we watched the surf for hours. Thank you, kindest of sirs.

yup, we love this place too Sheila! take care, Linda

  • Thanks, Linda! I thought of you as I barreled along the Pike at Chicopee ~ pedal to the metal in both directions! When heading east, I always try to get to 128 by 2 pm, for obvious reasons! Think I said somewhere that I stay at the Atlantis Oceanfront Inn (think that’s it ~ it used to be just plain old Atlantis Motor Inn), & you probably know it ~ just along Atlantic Ave. from Good Harbor. My 47th year (often multiple trips per year) visiting Cape Ann.

    Beautiful beach view Sheila …

  • Thanks, Tom. A great place for dog walking, at least out of season (crowds descend by late June), & last week’s surf, while not up to Kona Coast & Californian & Australian standards, was impressive, with swells & breakers to 15 feet. Gorgeous… & the sound is music to my ears!

Lovely sandy beach Sheila – must be great to holiday there. Well captured too ! Love the twin lights, they just balance the picture.

  • Thank you, Roy. The Thacher’s lights show up in a variety of different spots around that side of Cape Ann (the island doesn’t move, as far as I know… but the viewer oft gets the impression that it does). AND, despite its designation as a ‘cape’, Cape Ann itself is in reality an island. Does one ever really know where one is?

    stunning work

  • Thanks, JOC. Marathon surf last week ~ right outside my window, & pounding all night long. I LOVE it; like some Wagnerian lullaby!

Great shot Sheila, what a lovely location to live!!

  • There are MANY times I wish I did live there ~ I’ve spent more time there in the last 47 years than many of the residents! My sister & brother-in-law lived on Cape Ann for a couple of years, & my nephew (about to turn 43) was born there. I have a whole circle of friends & relatives in the area. Maybe one of these days…. Every time I or we go there, it’s a thousand mile round-trip! Thanks, Shaun.

Oh Sheila! You’ll have to wave as you whiz by!!! ;o))))
We have went to the “Ocean Front Inn” a few times. It’s a beautiful old mansion turned into a hotel! Yankee Magazine offers a special once in a while.
They lost the roof off one of their buildings during the winter storm a year ago!
Glad you had a great time! Cann’t wait to get back out there!
    take care, Linda

  • If your inn was the Bass Rocks Ocean Inn, it’s right next door to the Atlantis, & can be seen here. The house associated with it is the so-called ‘Wedding Cake House’, & the bride for whom it was built refused to live there. That it?? Anyway, the near end of the Atlantis can be seen in the wide-angle shot of the Bass Rocks. At present, much work is being done to the south end of BR ~ lots of noise during the day, all drowned out by the roaring surf!

No, it was further on up the drive. It is a dark old Victorian Mansion, and they have added some other out side buildings over the years. I’ll have to see if I can find the website! thanks for the link Sheila. Can you imagine having a house like that, and refusing to live in it???? some people! ha! have fun. lj
