Hood ornament on a 1956 Ford Customline V8 sedan. The rest of the car was there, too, but this iconic thing was so spiffy, & it looked so good in black-&-white that I had to give it priority. Taken in Sudbury, Massachusetts, along with many, many, many other shots.

Cool! The traditional “go faster” hood ornament! Too bad they’re no longer a feature on today’s cars. Still remember the winged “A” on Pop’s Austin Cambridge and the birdie thing on Dad’s Humber. Sorry. I ramble nostalgic. Great shot!

  • Oh, ramble on, Cornball. We had a ‘55 Chevy with a helluva fine swept-wing plane hood ornament. I remember those Austin A’s. There were swans & the Pontiac chief’s head & on & on. Safety issue now; bah, humbug… I’ll take my chances. Thanks, Mike.

We don’t see so many bonnet/hood emblems these days, which is a pity. Probably ’elf an safety. Nice shot.

  • Thanks, Alex. Bring ’em back, I say, though one of these would look extremely peculiar on my little Mazda.

Great bit of nostalgia. Excellent photo, Sheila.

  • Thanks, Steve. I had fun with this one, & with this car in general!

The black and white makes it look very nostalgic, Sheila! I still remember my Dad shining up the hoodie on his car! :o)

  • Thanks, Deb. The owner of the Horse Farm where this Ford resides is a major old car guy – has quite a business in the trade, though this was the only example on the property.

Still plenty of these around in Cuba Sheila, the only trouble is you’ll have one car but made up of a Ford, Buick and possibly a Chrysler. Good pic, nice in

    black & white.

  • Thanks, Roy. Yes, Cuba is a Mecca for old Americano cars, but as you say…. I guess if you make it a practice to photograph only hood ornaments, you’re all set.

Great abstract Sheila, and you even caught the oxidizing bubbles on the ornament. Kudos girlie. >Ron<

  • Thanks, Ron! I’ve played around with this one a bit – also got one head on with the Ford crest underneath, but I like this one better. The car needs a fair amount of cosmetic work, but it’s in good shape. Maybe a little rubbing compound….

Lovely shapes and contours Sheila, love old cars.

  • Thanks, Gary. This fellow had quite a collection, though this was the only one we saw. I liked it in b & w.

Great shot Sheila ! I have a few of them, from Damascus. Until 15 year ago almost all the cars in Syria were dating back to the 50ies or 60ies, so they still have all the accessories, original or copies, and even as such, museum pieces… But I don’t have the cars fitting… ;-)

  • Thank you, Helene – this car sat all by itself like a trophy on the Horse Farm.
