The Belgian ‘Spitz’ barge, Fingal, passes us as we walk along the towpath near Ft. Augustus. Ray & I were on a 6-day cruise from Fort William to Inverness in September/October of 2003, with ten friends. The Fingal was named for Capt. Martin Balcombe’s dog who accompanied us on the trip, & on many of our adventures ashore. Martin & his partner bought the barge in 1995, refurbished it, & began running these marvellous excursions shortly thereafter. Fingal is 138 feet long & carries an array of equipment for the use of passengers. These include canoes, mountain bikes, one-man sailboats, & a 16-foot sailboat that will accommodate four people. The boat travels about 10 miles a day, & passengers can be dropped off to hike (as we were doing here) or bike, to be picked up at a designated spot along the way.
I am quite sure that this is the same vessel that can be seen in Roy Massicks’s photo here
And yet another fine Massicks presentation that is unquestionably the Fingal .
