Looking more or less northward, up Fifth Avenue through the Washington Square Arch. The marble arch stands 77 feet high, & was designed by prominent New York architect Stanford White. Construction began in 1892, & the arch was dedicated in 1895. As you might guess, it honors George Washington, for whom the fine little park is named. Washington Square Park sits in the middle of Greenwich Village near New York University. About twenty-five blocks north, at Fifth Avenue & W. 33rd Street, stands the Empire State Building, which can be see in the distance here. Turn around 180 degrees, & you will see this .
