Spring In Washington Square, New York, NYby artwhiz47
Looking more or less northward, up Fifth Avenue through the Washington Square Arch. The marble arch stands 77 feet high, & was designed by prominent New York architect Stanford White. Construction began in 1892, & the arch was dedicated in 1895. As you might guess, it honors George Washington, for whom the fine little park is named. Washington Square Park sits in the middle of Greenwich Village near New York University. About twenty-five blocks north, at Fifth Avenue & W. 33rd Street, stands the Empire State Building, which can be see in the distance here. Turn around 180 degrees, & you will see this .
Thanks, Mike. Had fun on that short trip – stayed just around the corner from here at the Washington Square Hotel – a small, family-run, very European-feeling hostelry. Spent a lot of time people-watching.
Thanks, Dave. Lots of dog-watching in the park, too!

Great spot!! Love the memories this brings back
Thank you, M ~ I also took a pic of a street performer, a sort-of, or perhaps would-be, poet/singer who would make up a song for you. I talked to him & hung around listening to his product. We had a VERY funny & interesting conversation!
Thanks, Brock. I think the essence of Mike’s comment is ‘springy’, & I can handle that. Springy today, forsooth – gale winds, they say, warm & stormy. Same for you. Duck & cover.
superb composition, love the view through the arch, so much detail and the figure in the foreground make this..a cracking shot!
Thank you, James. That woman in the red sweater, almost certainly an NYU student, kept moving around, but because I REALLY wanted to get that red in my shot, I waited for her to position herself in The Composition. I thought of asking her to sit there, but didn’t want to force the issue, & she finally settled in on her own!
Well composed, interesting read, with an awesome DOF, just read your Homepage Profile, and I must say you have achieved alot of varied accomplishments in your young life…Kudos to you Sheila!!!
Many thanks, Larry – my Young Life, eh? Thanks for that as well… only ten years younger than you, I believe…. This photo & its mate were taken with my old Pentax film camera – a camera I still use; it has outstanding optics.

Thanks, Tracy – this was actually taken four years ago when we visited NYC in April. A view looking in the opposite direction can be seen here .

Excellent capture Sheila and the Empire State Building is beautifully framed in the arch. Nice work …
Many thanks, Tom. I like Edinburgh much better than NYC as a place to visit…. But the Big Apple has its moments!

My old stomping grounds!! Just about lived there as a teenager! The West Village……..brings back memories……:-)
How cool!! It’s my favorite part of the City, though I love the area up around Central Park – Midtown – too. Thanks!
