Of all the many hundreds of images taken at Art Unit over a three year period this one has become the iconic image of the time and place. The origins of the image were more innocuous than it may seem. It is a chance image of a sleeping man in a theatre set and I doubt that the same power could have been achieved by setting the photograph up.
The set was for Christopher Barnett and his theatre/performance troupe AK 47 in January 1983. The whole event was called ‘Experts in Fear’ and comprised of three separate performance peices: these were ‘The Last Days of the World’ , ‘Ulrike Meinhoff sings’ and ‘Jazzpoems’. The dreaming sleeper was the late Peter ‘Jack’ Cheslyn and the photograph honours him as much as it does Art Unit
