Recovery

Mixed media.
Patchwork relating to a larger work I’m doing about the Victorian bushfires of February 2009.
Each image is extracted and abstracted from photographs I found on the internet taken at the time of the fires.
Smoke damaged, as their lives and hearts and minds will be for some time to come, for most always remaining so.. be damaged by the nightmare of the fires
The patchwork is symbolic of the recovery, handstitched to represent the time and effort it will take for the victims and their communities to put the pieces of their shattered lives back together. The needle and thread still attatched to represent the ongoing process of recovery. The quilt to symbolise comfort.

Wow, this is going to be beautiful!! What are you going to do with it when youve finished?

  • Sticky Flower replied

This series of works has been epic.My heart is heavy..and each time I do something with it there are more thoughts but I can’t do any more..this one is for now finished as it is..I have a large work consisting of little squares like this one that I have to finalise for assessment..I’m not sure whether they will all end up together down the track…thankyou so much.:-)

Auction for victims maybe, its so beautiful

  • Sticky Flower replied

shit, I just realised I didn’t answer your question properly..sorry…originally I was going to sell each little piece off and donate the profits…an auction would be a great idea…but i want it to go to a gallery because it’s historical..and I can’t imagine the average every day person wanting it on their wall, most would find the constant reminder depressing I think..but having said that I think and hope that the overall message I have delivered is one of hope strength, compassion and unity :-)

bwhahaha, glad to see im not the only one disty on here. As for a constant reminder, nothing wrong with remembering something as sobering as this. It makes me for one realise that something like the fires can happen at anytime and is a constant reminder to not sweat the small bits of crap that litter our lives. It is so beautiful, youve done an awesome job here. Im glad youre not separating them, that would be a bloody crime :)

wonderful artwork and gesture! gosh, I’d never have the patience to create something as artistic as this!

  • Sticky Flower replied

patience?AHAHAHA! sewing is one of the things I least have patience for..determination is probably a better word, with frequent bouts of frustration leading to bouts of chronic and excessive procrastination. :-)

A friend of mine lost her house to fire around this time. I know this piece would be very special to her as well as those in Australia. Thank you much for this.
