From my illustration of a little spirit bear. Available in adults and kids shirts, onesies, sticker and an iPhone case.
“The spirit bear may owe its survival to the protective traditions of the First Nations, who never hunted the animals or spoke of them to fur trappers” – National Geographic
Not a polar, not albino, The Kermode or Spirit bear is a black bear born white. They are only found in a small area of the British Columbia forest and there’s thought to only be about 400 left. They can be born to 2 black parents who have the recessed gene.1/10 of this small population are born white. It’s illegal to hunt the kermode bear but unfortunately the black bear are not protected in this area even though they carry the kermode gene.Their future is dependent on their habitat being protected and buffered against migration with other black bears, diluting the gene pool.
