Bound and Unified in Contrast by

An original work and first design of its kind.
Fibres used: Banana, jacaranda, philodendron draconea (all grown and collected from my own Far North Queensland tropical backyard), linen thread and raffia.

Technique: Woven, coiled, stitched & assembled. Estapol spray varnished.
Height 460 mm x Width 320 mm x Depth 320 mm.
Exhibition Elevating the Spirit Exhibition (recently toured Townsville April 24- May 31, 2009)

Symbolism

  • X – vortex, physical/spiritual realms, “as is above, so is below”, zero point,
  • vessel – containment, embodiment, alchemy, offering, inner/outer realms
  • stitching – binding, unification, direction, attachment

In Collection of the Artist .

  • About the photo – was one of the first successful documentations of this work, having setup and used for the very first time, my ‘new’ softbox lights & background roll paper in an indoor studio setting and taken with my Manual Pentax K1000 on a tripod (before the digital camera era).
  • Extra note – Each large fibre receptacle is a unique one off design and physically they can take awhile to do, anywhere from 1 up to 3 weeks. These are focused for gallery exhibitions. For retail commercial/merchandise viability I make the smaller, including ‘miniature’ size banana fibre receptacles. It is very time consuming, anywhere from 1 to 5 hours for each one, depending on the size and design features.

About Kerryn Madsen-Pietsch

My creative art practice may be be succinctly summed up in the following fantastic metaphorical quote by Kandinsky:

“Colour is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key then another to cause vibration of the soul.”

beautiful work kerryn. adn love what you say about the symbolism

  • Much appreciated Deborah. Yes this work has been a great teacher and instigator for many other works – of note those in my Elevating the Spirit solo exhibition work where there is ‘much’ symbolism happening. Thankyou for your visit.
