When I was younger I wanted a dog.
One late summer evening
we found a puppy in our yard
tired and hungry he entered our home.
I was told I could care for him
though he would never be my own.

I took care of the pup
and named him Gray
every morning we would play
three short days later
they took him away,
He went home.

When I was older I wanted a car.
I saved all my money
and bought an old truck
the tires were bald, the gas it did suck
It finally quit running
though I was not out of luck.

My friend loaned me his to drive for a while
it ran like a dream
and I drove with a smile
he needed it back
now I have none,
It went home.

When I was married I wanted a child.
To my delight
the news I received
a baby would be born
the joy will be
here in the spring.

A gift from God everyone did say.
God wanted his gift back
one cold winter day
he took the child
away from me.
He went home.

Cherish today, yesterday is gone.
The fleeting years of life
are a wisp in the wind
of time
in the blink of an eye
a lifetime.

I’m only here for a little while.
Nothing lasting will I be
not a permanent mark
like a sea or a stone
It’s seems to me
I am on loan
