The Opuntia ficus-indica (prickly pear) cactus, with fruit. Painted from photographs I took in Torrey Pines State Reserve, La Jolla Ca..
These cactii also grow wild in Israel. The fruit is delicious particularly when eaten ice-cold. It conjures up sweet memories of childhood summer days.
It became a symbol of native Israelis – prickly on the outside but soft and sweet on the inside. (known as Sabra or the Hebrew word “Tsabar” )
Painted with W&N paints and a few touches of watercolor pencils on 140lbs CP Arches paper. I painted this paper mainly to experiment with some products I havnt used before: Lifting preparation, applied to the paper before painting and enables restoring the white of the paper from dark areas(eg the knobbly bits on the fruit). Granulation medium – mixed with the paint to give a mottled appearance (strongest effect on the bottom left leaf.
I recommend looking at the larger version to see the details.
