The Bride and the Butterfly Hunter
This image is based on a play by the Israeli playwright Nissim Aloni.
A young bride runs away from her wedding ceremony to a park where she meets a man who takes every Wednesday afternoon off work to come there and hunt butterflies. The play consists of their dialogs and monologues.
It wasnt the storyline or th details of their conversations that affected me so much. It was the situation, the futility of it all and the melancholy air – neither of them felt they belong where they came from, but they also did not belong where they came to. Although they had much in common, they didnt ‘find’ each other or even help each other. Just two lost people in the middle of nowhere relevant and nowhere significant to go…
In the play here where no robots, it wasnt in a desolate place, and there were no flying fish, but this is my take on the situation and the feelings.

Extremely cool. Bizarre—but brilliant.

This is beautiful and haunting… and your description really resonates with the dilemma of the modern man… I’m a big fan of Albert Camus and this adds to that gnawing voice of lostness that never seems to go away…

Thanks Gary, I saw this play 30 years ago, but nothing much seems to have changed since :(

Mashehu-mashehu, Pnina! Great! It was quite depressing, Nissim Aloni’s play, if I remember correctly…

Your ekphrasis is STUNNING!!!
I love the take you have of that play! You have created a stunning atmosphere to the desolation and the futile philosophical aims of the play.
